Sherni, which translates to Lioness in the punjabi language, is a project/book that exhibits portraits, archives and belongings of my Grandmother - Harbans Kaur. My initial idea for the project was to capture portraits of all 3 main women in my life but, I have now focused on my grandmother. This project simply explores close intimate settings with my grandmother, whilst capturing things that belong to her, it explores how I see my grandmother's identity and how her culture has been the most significant factor in her life. The project goes hand in hand with intimacy, memories, colour, archive, family, culture, identity and a sense of proudness for my grandmother. I am also adding these pictures to an ongoing archive which my mother first started (Photo album) . I mainly wanted to focus on my grandmother because she is the main woman in the family, she really holds the family together and I wanted to show her off in a new light. She is a woman who has adapted to a westernised world, but she is a woman who is very proud to be a Sikh. Through out the book I have added quotes from my grandmother but, this project would not be what it is without colour. Colour is splashed throughout the book to present a shortcut to a connection with the audience. Essentially, colour evokes particular emotions and a consciousness of what these images could mean. I want to celebrate my grandmother and celebrate her in a way I have seen her all my life. one day, as she says, she will be gone and all we have is photos. So, having the chance to show her beauty and her royalty is something I will cherish for the rest of my life.
